Memory Problem

What would cause the MB to see 2 sticks at 1 gig each and now sees them at only 512 each. They are pc3200 400mhz dual channel sticks. I cant believe they both went bad at the same time?

I would need to know what model the board is to try and find info out about it for you, But I would probably start testing with one stick at a time and with other sticks out of a know working system, If you put in a stick of 256 mg will it see 128?
