Myke, I read your tutoial on the free BSD software and you did a good job far as I can tell with out actually downloading and fallowing the steps my self. I do however, have a few questions, before I do try for fun and learning.
Can you choose any name for your own Website?
Dose your Email have to be called Squirrle mail if you used the Free BSD?
Dose the Free BSD website give a tutorial or any other usefull reading once you down load their system?
You said know a minimum knowelage of Linux or unix would be usefull / nessasary, could you sugest a book I could read to get a basic head start on this (something beginers) if there is such a thing?
Are there any college classes that are important to someone wanting to serve.
Why would I want to do this,,,,,,,,,Because I can do anything I set my mind too. ?!

Can you choose any name for your own Website?

You can use a domain service like www.Godaddy.com and do a search for the domain you are interested in, I searched for judypie.com and it is avalible for $8.95 per year.

Squirrel Mail is the software package I picked for the front end of my Q mail pop3 server , there are others but this is one of the most popular ones.

Yes, FreeBSD has the best on-line documentation I have ever seen!
The handbook at www.freebsd.org can almost always answer your question about FreeBSD.

Not really, Unix is not really a beginners thing, you need to just dig in, get a spare computer and install it and jump in there and try it. You might want to consider something like Clark Connect rather then FreeBSD is you are looking for something easy.

You can check at your college to see if there is any classes they offer for linux or unix, its not very popular in many schools for some reason.
I suggest IRC (Internet Relay Chat) as a learning tool.

Running a Unix server at home is not for everyone, its allot of work and difficult to learn without help, there are Web hosting services available that are not very costly, like I mentioned the www.godaddy.com for domain registration , there is also www.buydomains.com and Web hosting services like www.powweb.com and www.teknonmedia.com that offer Web site hosting for between $4 and $8 per month. You could register with Godaddy and host with teknon for one year and spend a little over $50.
