It was a question asked, that has been asked before so here is the solution....

    Hit-Da-Pipe Password Discovery Tutorial

    Quote:
Obviously I don't know everything or I would not be playing with silly web sites, I would be developing a source of Cheap clean power for the world. But since I don't know how to do that and I do however, know a little about passwords, here is my 2 cents.

People have asked me, "myke, I forgot my password" and "Can you get it for me?" Sometimes people will bring a computer to me for repair and they don't know what their password is or didn't tell me or forgot to tell me what it is.

Out of necessity, I have done quite a bit of research on the topic, Google is always your best friend at times like these. What you discover when you run into this problem is how easy it is to retrieve lost passwords! And this brings to mind how easy it would be for someone to steal your password without your knowledge.

There are many tools available that people can keep with them on a USB drive, or even stored in a remote internet accessible account of their own, or on a remote server. These tools can be quickly installed and used to discover passwords of all types; there are not many which are totally secure, if any. Everyone has a different theory on what is the best procedure to follow for secure password habits, but if someone wants yours, they can get it!

A hacker could take over your account with just your account name. Passwords are easy to find, it can be done in two seconds, using password identification software.

One example of this would be programs that use a list of 200 most common passcodes and/or looks for words that are uncommon.
By uncommon I mean words that are not used to program software.

Some security experts believe that the best passwords to use are similar to codes used by software.

    Some examples would be ...

    KERNEL32
    keyboard
    mmsound
    pifmgr
    setup
    StringFileInfo
    CompanyName
    Microsoft
    FileDescription

These types of Password recovery tools, like the password ID software, have to eliminate the above words as potential passcodes to be effective so it would not focus on these word's, (too common). All the cute or clever passwords stick out like a sore thumb if this type of software is used.

I personally don't know if I buy into this theory myself yet. I still prefer a complicated password with mixed Upper and Lower case letters and numbers. But you can be sure, if you don't use caution, you will get hacked!

    Windows XP

The Administrator Password: As far as I know, there is no way to discover this password from a Windows XP machine but you can "reset" the password to something you DO know.

This is a good solution to the problem, however if you use Encryption for your email (this is rare) then the information contained within this email account would be lost forever.

That said, here is where I got the tool that I have used with good success to "reset" the Administrator Password.

I found this tool at this site ----> www.lostpassword.com
Copy this URL into your browsers address bar. They offer some free utilities to help you discover "some" passwords but they want $200 to reset your Windows XP password.

In Windows 98 you can use a variety of different tools available on The Net to discover the Administrator Password, but it is really very simple to do by hand...

1)When the computer boots, keep pressing F8 until you get to a boot screen.

    2)Select boot in DOS.

3)Get yourself into the windows folder by typing "cd windows" (without the quotation marks)

4)next type "dir *.pwl". This will display the login password files.

5)After you found out the one which is yours (or anyone elses you want to get into) type "del username.pwl" (without the quotation marks)

    6)Reboot the computer

7)When you have to login, put in the username you deleted, and enter any password you like.

8)The computer will say sumthin like "No password. Would you like to use this one? Confirm?

9)Put your password in, and thats it!

Email Passwords: Can be discovered by actually creating a "fake" email server on your own machine, or another machine on your network. You first create this fake email server and then point your email client to that address when you check for mail, and Bam! your user name and password is discovered! Slick! There are many pop3 email password tools available on The Net one is located here h t t p: // lastbit.com/default.asp Copy this address into your Browsers address bar.

There are some free tools that can be used to discover your email password for site's like AOL, MSN or Yahoo, web-based email. If your password is shown with asterisk's ***** you can use a tool like this to recover it. Pretty easy stuff. One that works good for that is located on the Lostpassword site I mentioned above. Free!

Some additional tips to help you stay secure....

Avoid giving out your account name for the purpose of security, is good advice in any case.

Never give out your home email address when creating web accounts on The Net.

Always use a free remote email service, on the web, to insulate and protect your real email name (account name)

Avoid being a victim, Once inside your account, you won't know they are there, Initially they have access to your e-mail; eventually they will access your computer whenever you go online, tracing your every move.

INTERNET CRIME is an epidemic, and growing stronger. Protect yourself or suffer the consequences.

Believe me, I know. I know people that have done it!
